Forecastle Festival “Captain’s Log” - January

January 30th, 2009 by forecastle

Dear Friends ~

Welcome to the January Captain’s Log. If you’re in the Midwest, hopefully this finds you warm and with electricity. It’s been a treacherous week. Some major developments aboard the Forecastle Ship, as we make a sharp turn towards land. Here’s what transpired in January:

Forecastle has announced a partnership with Nederlander Entertainment, the country’s oldest concert promoter, since 1912. Nederlander will handle all West Stage talent in 2009, as we all work to take Forecastle to the next level.

Congratulations to Bloomington’s “The Broderick” ~ winner of the nationwide JanSport / Forecastle “Battle of the Bands” competition. Over 1500 entries. A mixture of public and private voting landed them a spot at this summer’s festival, July 10th – 12th at the Riverfront. If you were at Halfway, you got to catch a secret appearance, right after Cincinnati’s Buffalo Killers.

Thanks to everyone who came out to “Halfway to Forecastle.” It was one of our most successful events, in one of the city’s coolest developments. We especially appreciate the folks who traveled from Indiana, Ohio, and elsewhere to be with us at the halfway mark. Kudos to Havana Cola and Red Bull North America for making the event possible.

MUSIC. Forecastle will be announcing our headliners soon, and tickets will go on-sale shortly thereafter. In the meantime, get your band submissions in. In two months the entry process will end. Submit your materials here: http://www.sonicbids.com/forecastle

ART. We have announced the theme to the 2009 art exhibition (“H2U”) and will be awarding (10) artists a $1000 grant to complete an environmental art installation at the 8th annual event. The artists will be chosen from each one of our sister cities across the Midwest. To submit your designs, visit: http://forecastlefest.com/submissions-art.php

ACTIVISM. In addition to over (60) orgs from across the region, we are looking for interesting speakers to host at this year’s festival. Ordinary people who have accomplished extraordinary things. From scientific research to climbing Mt. McKinley, our headlamp is shining in all circles. If you know someone with an interesting story, tell them to cross paths.

FILM. Submission categories have been updated. To submit as a filmmaker, please visit: https://www.withoutabox.com/login/6543

Forecastle is forming Facebook groups in each of our cities across the Midwest. If you live within three-hundred miles of Louisville, and would like your city represented, please let us know. All admins will be rewarded for time on the project, with the most successful campaign receiving a $1500 festival package. So far we have groups in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Nashville, Lexington, Bloomington, Murfreesboro, Evansville, Dayton, Muncie, and Louisville. Mssg me if you would like the links.

That’s it, winter friends. As our ship makes an icy turn towards land, monthly “Captain’s Logs” will continue to arrive offering updates on our journey. Be expecting big news in February. Thanks again for your kindness, commitment, words, and actions. Act (+) and keep the faith ~ jkm

HALFWAY TO FORECASTLE ~ LINEUPS ANNOUNCED!!

November 14th, 2008 by forecastle

Dear Travelers ~

Although slightly less than eight months away, the Captain and Crew of the 8th annual Forecastle Festival are proud to announce the lineups for the 2nd annual “Halfway To Forecastle” mini-fest, taking place Saturday, January 17th at The Green Building in downtown Louisville, KY. A portion of proceeds will benefit efforts to establish the first Lower Ohio Riverkeeper Chapter, a project inspired by Riverkeeper attorney and Forecastle speaker Robert. F. Kennedy Jr to protect and preserve our nation’s waterways. The project is being overseen by The Kentucky Waterways Alliance, a citizen’s organization dedicated to protecting and restoring Kentucky’s waterways through advocacy and grassroots awareness.

The music lineup will include DJ 2nd Nature, Buffalo Killers, Ekoostik Hookah, The Protomen, DJs Narwhal & A-Bell, Squeeze-Bot, and many more. The show will also feature an appearance by the winner of the JanSport “Battle of the Bands” competition, which drew over 1800 entries from across the United States, for a chance to perform on the West Stage of the 8th annual Forecastle Festival, July 10th – 12th at the Riverfront Belvedere.

The art component will be equally highlighted, with an exhibition from Julia Christensen titled Big Box Reuse. Supporting her book, Big Box is a road trip across America looking at what becomes of the spaces (”big boxes”) superstores leave behind when they abandon the building for bigger stores. From churches, retail outlets, charter schools, courthouses, senior centers and even spam museums, Big Box Reuse shows the many practical reuses of buildings that initially seemed suited for one function. Since the spring of 2004, Christensen has driven over 75,000 miles, visiting converted big boxes and meeting the people who are transforming these massive shells into useful structures for their community.

The activism lineup will include six Kentucky environmental organizations ranging from The Sierra Club to Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, presenting interactive, educational exhibits for attendees to engage and enjoy.

Forecastle has again partnered with presenting sponsor Havana Cola and supporting sponsor Red Bull North America, who will provide an outdoor-themed film area featuring national athletes in an array of extreme environments across the globe.

Tickets are extremely limited, and will go on sale Saturday, November 15th exclusively at Ear X-Tacy Records. They are $12 in advance, $15 day or show. All ages. For complete lineup and ticket information, please visit: www.forecastlefest.com.

Forecastle Festival “Captain’s Log” - Oct / 08

November 2nd, 2008 by forecastle

Dear Friends ~

Greetings and welcome to the 2nd Captain’s Log of 2009. Our ship is still far at sea, with lots of behind the scenes planning and preparation for the 8th annual Forecastle Festival. We’ve also been consumed with the upcoming election, working for candidates that support sustainable environmental policies / practices / resource management, and will push this legislative agenda in Congress. The time spent away has been precious. Here is our October developments:

Music and Film submissions are now officially open.

To apply for a music showcase spot at Forecastle 2009, please visit: http://www.sonicbids.com/forecastle

To apply for a film showcase spot at Forecastle 2009, please visit: http://www.forecastlefest.com/submissions-film.php

There is a chance our organization may be joining forces with a strategic, industry leader in the upcoming weeks. We’ve met with several prospects over the past several months, and talks will continue throughout November. If and when something finalizes, we will be hiring personnel in several key areas. If you’re interested in coming aboard our ship, please e-mail: jk@forecastlefest.com

Forecastle is now on Twitter. To follow us, please visit: http://www.twitter.com/forecastle

The 2nd annual “Halfway to Forecastle” concert will be January 17th, 2009. Venue, line-ups, and beneficiaries will be announced following the election. Until then, please circle the date on your calendar. Last year’s “Halfway to Forecastle” featured performances from Band of Horses and VHS or Beta, raising over $5,000 for injured Louisville BMX legend Jimmy Levan. To see highlights of that show, please visit: http://www.forecastlefest.com/media.php

My last message is important: please vote Nov. 4th. We live in a country where representative democracy is at its best, despite the influence of money and lack of enforcement / oversight to our campaign finance laws. From an environmental perspective, we are a decisive time whose majority interest will determine our legacy. As much as we like to focus on other things, civilization is at a tipping point. The growing discrepancy between human needs vs. available resources is unsustainable, and will forever disrupt the delicate balance / homeostasis vital to ecosystems we depend on. This non-partisan issue affects all of us, and is not going away. It will be at the forefront of the next administration’s legislative priorities. It was part of the most recent economic stimulus package passed last month, and will likely be part of the second when Congress reconvenes this month. On Nov. 4th, we can choose leaders who will join other countries in implementing universal goals and initiatives, or choose to isolate ourselves further by refusing to act or fully recognize the problem. While acknowledging the impact our personal decisions and purchasing power has on the crisis, who we vote into office will have the greatest opportunity to fix it. In the past (8) years, so many environmental protection laws have been gutted, amended, or removed completely by our executive branch. We need to let the world know the United States is engaged and ready to re-join this global fight, and that business and sustainable policies can work side-by-side, creating jobs while improving lives. Express yourself Tuesday.

That is it, friends. While our ship remains out at sea, monthly “Captain’s Logs” will continue to arrive offering important updates on the January “Halfway to Forecastle” concert along with the main event next summer. Thanks again for your words and actions ~ jkm

Forecastle Festival Capt’s Log - Sept / 08

September 30th, 2008 by forecastle

Dear Friends ~

Greetings and welcome to the first Captain’s Log of Forecastle 2009. Two months ago we descended upon the Ohio River for (3) glorious days of music, art, and activism. Now our ship is back at sea, planning its return for the 8th annual Forecastle Festival.

To celebrate seven years of continuous growth, we launched a complete, retrospective multimedia history of Forecastle, available at: http://www.forecastlefest.com/media.php exclusively. 75% of the footage has never been viewed, from the first photo taken in 2002, to the most recent in July of 2008. It epitomizes the experience, showcasing the “best of the best” from seven years. Exclusive performances from The Disco Biscuits, Girl Talk, Sleater-Kinney, De La Soul, Tortoise, Band of Horses, GZA, and others are paired with interviews featuring National Geographic, Spank Rock, Jansport, Del McCoury, Particle, and more. Also included is the much demanded 1-hour keynote from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. To unveil the unreleased footage, we’ll be doing a show Oct. 11th at The Peak Summit Music and Dance Festival. The multimedia will be debuted in a presentation titled: Almost There: 7 Years aboard the Forecastle Ship. See http://www.peaksummit.com for details.

Oct. 20th will officially open the submission period for the 2009 season. We encourage all musicians, artists, and filmmakers to apply. Please check the website for updates on how to submit work for review and consideration. Similarly, we will update on the “Halfway to Forecastle” concerts, Jan. 26th @ Headliners Music Hall. Last year’s sold-out benefit featured performances from Band of Horses, VHS or Beta, Cass McCombs and many more. If you would like to be considered for Halfway to Forecastle, we recommend you submit your work before Nov. 15th.

The 2nd annual Forecastle College Tour will kick-off after the election, visiting each of our 10-participating cities to further promote the music, art, and film submissions for 2009. Stay glued to the website for updates on when Forecastle will be coming to a city near you.

That’s it, travelers. As our ship remains out at sea, monthly “Captain’s Logs” will continue to arrive offering important updates on the January “Halfway to Forecastle” concerts along with the main event next summer at the Riverfront Belvedere. Thanks again for all your kindness, support, words and actions ~ jkm

GZA AND DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN ADDED TO FORECASTLE FESTIVAL

July 2nd, 2008 by forecastle

Dear Friends ~

Forecastle is thrilled to announce the addition of Wu-Tang Clan founder GZA and Heiroglyphics founder Del the Funky Homosapian as co-headliners of the festival’s opening night, July 25th at the Riverfront Belvedere. Largely viewed as the masterminds behind two of hip-hop’s most influential dynasties, they unite together to take the place of Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man, who was originally scheduled.

Most recently, we announced acclaimed environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the year’s keynote speaker. The complete, 3-day music line-up also includes The Disco Biscuits, Tortoise, Z-Trip, The Del McCoury Band, Ekoostik Hookah, Dr. Dog, The New Mastersounds, Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, and many more.

For complete line-ups, please visit: http://www.forecastlefest.com

The GZA (also known as The Genius) is the oldest member of the Wu-Tang Clan and the cousin of the group’s founder, RZA. Known for his smooth, scimitar-sharp flow and vivid storytelling abilities, his discography includes the hip-hop classic Liquid Swords, with successful follow ups Beneath the Surface, Legend of the Liquid Sword, and most recently, Grandmasters.

Del the Funky Homosapian is the cousin of renowned rapper Ice Cube, and founder of the influential underground hip-hop collective Heiroglypics. Both his debut "Third Eye Vision" and follow-up "Deltron 3030" garnered extreme praise for their combination of beats and flow and futuristic style. In 2001, Del was included on BLUR frontman Damon Albarn’s project Gorillaz, adding his recognizable vocals to the hit "Clint Eastwood," a song that he also began incorporating in his live sets. Del is currently working on his 11th studio album.

Tickets are available via TicketWeb, Ticketmaster, and select independent record stores, including ear X-tacy Records in Louisville, CD Central in Lexington, Euclid Records in St. Louis, Grimey’s in Nashville, Indy CD & Vinyl in Indianapolis, Landlocked Records in Bloomington, and Shake-It Records in Cincinnati. Advanced tickets range from $15 – 20 per day, day of show $18 – 23. Two-day and three-day passes are available, as well as a limited number of VIP passes at $50 a day.
